Description

A Parad Shivling, also known as a Rasalingam, is a representation of the Hindu deity Shiva that is made from solidified mercury. In Hinduism, mercury (called “parad” in Sanskrit and “pada-rasam” in Tamil) is considered the seed of Lord Shiva. The process of solidifying mercury is a secret tradition passed down by the Tamil Siddhas.

Composition and Creation
Parad Shivlings are made by solidifying mercury, often through an alchemical process that involves combining mercury with other elements like sulfur.

According to some sources, the process of purification is called Ashtasanskar (eight stages of purification) which removes impurities and makes the mercury suitable for worship.

Some modern analysis suggests that some “Rasalingams” might be alloys of mercury with other metals, or even made of gallium, which has a similar appearance to mercury but is less toxic.

Religious and Spiritual Significance
A Parad Shivling is considered a highly sacred and powerful object in Hindu worship.

It is believed that worshipping a single Parad Shivling is equivalent to worshipping 108 different types of Shivlings.

It is said that worshipping a Parad Shivling can bring good luck, wealth, and prosperity, and protect against negative influences and natural calamities.

It is also believed to have a calming effect on the mind and to aid in meditation and spiritual practices.

Some texts suggest that the presence of a Parad Shivling in a home leads to the residence of Goddess Lakshmi for generations.

The touch or sight of a purified Parad Shivling is believed to neutralize the effects of sins.
